Ebony Webber, chief officer of operations for the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS), remembers conversations throughout her career of almost 20 years about a potential partnership with the National FFA Organization.

“There always seemed to be a natural synergy,” Webber says. “Many of our members were and still are positively affected by their involvement within MANRRS. I imagine those who were or are part of FFA experience something similar.”

Both FFA and MANRRS provide avenues for career exploration, leadership training and professional development to their members. Several MANRRS members are also legacy members of New Farmers of America, which merged into the Future Farmers of America (now the National FFA Organization) in 1965. Therefore, Webber says a partnership between the two organizations was a natural fit.

Reaching an Understanding
In July, National FFA and MANRRS representatives signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) — a guiding document that fosters trust and communication between both parties. Although it establishes a foundational framework of objectives and outlines expectations and responsibilities, changes can also be made as needed, Webber says.

Details are still being finalized, but the ongoing partnership will accomplish several things. Most notably, it aims to help elevate the voices and perspectives of all FFA and MANRRS members nationwide.

“It shows a community of people there is a path forward,” Webber says. “We’re looking to impact areas of agriculture education and make sure it is a place where everyone feels heard, seen, valued and included.”

Creating Opportunities for All
As the two organizations implement new programs and initiatives focused on creating a more equitable, diverse and inclusive workforce in agriculture and related industries, Webber hopes the partnership will promote increased collaboration among those possessing different backgrounds, interests and perspectives.

“I believe there is great power to be found when we choose to come together,” she says. “It’s important for us all to realize the benefits of being integrated with one another and consider how our lives are enhanced because of diversity.”
