Whether you feel compelled to collect things, teach people, volunteer your time or something else, these steps can inspire you to get out there and do good in your community.

1. Discover what your community needs.
The strongest community service projects solve a problem or perform an action that directly benefit your neighbors. It’s not always easy to understand what that is, however. Start by asking local leaders. Make a post on a community discussion board asking what needs aren’t being met. Talk to your local government or police officers about where they see the greatest needs.

2. Expand your horizons through service.
Have you ever wanted to try a new hobby? Or perhaps learn a new skill? Volunteering is a fun and easy way to explore your interests and passions. Get out of your comfort zone! Serve somewhere or do something you’ve never done before. Be selfless and strive to benefit people outside your typical circle of friends and family.

3. Create a plan.
Planning and completing a community service project requires time, effort and commitment. Outline what you want to accomplish. Set realistic timelines. Keep things simple. Attempting to go beyond your capabilities may result in problems, frustration and a poor service experience.

4. Arrange ways to assess the volunteer experience.
Make sure to have a plan to check in with yourself and any volunteers you recruit throughout the process to make sure everyone is satisfied with the project and that it’s accomplishing your goals. If not, you may want to adjust how the project operates.

5. Plan how to share and celebrate hard work.
Communication is an important piece of your project to gain support, share impacts and inspire others to act. The more times the message is heard and seen, the better. Plan to tell your story throughout the project on social media, in the local newspaper or another platform with pictures that show impact.
