When reviewing a resume, employees are looking at your past experiences and skills, but that doesn’t have to be limited to your education and previous jobs. Extracurricular activities, along with those that happen in the classroom, can showcase a bevy of experiences. Here Kaci Rice, a human resources expert from Bayer Crop Science, shares her tips on how to add these experiences to your resume.

  • First, be sure to include them. Extracurriculars are important and add value to your resume by showing leadership and commitment to potential employers.
  • As a high school student, you can create a section on your resume titled “Leadership and Involvement” or a similar phrase. This section should be formatted similarly to your work experience, listed with bullet points and dates.
  • If you’ve held a leadership position in an extracurricular organization, be sure to mention that. A leadership position within an extracurricular activity should read like a job, so include your title followed by your responsibilities in that particular role.
  • As an employer, Rice always tells students to keep a running list of their activities throughout the year. This will help prompt your memory when writing a resume.
  • Simple things such as volunteering at an animal shelter or picking up trash might strengthen your resume and set you apart from your competition.
