Retailers in ten states will offer shoppers the opportunity to support FFA members as they purchase G&R Farms Vidalia sweet onions through June 1.

The G&R Farms Vidalia sweet onion bags are now available, and the Growing America’s Farmers program will donate $0.25 for every 40-lb unit sold. The funds raised will support production agriculture education and scholarship opportunities at state and national levels.

Look for the G&R Farms Vidalia sweet onions at these locations:

  • Arkansas: Sam’s Club
  • Georgia: Kroger, Sam’s Club
  • Illinois: Roundy’s, Sam’s Club
  • Indiana: Sam’s Club
  • Louisiana: Sam’s Club
  • New Jersey: Wakefern
  • North Carolina: Harris Teeter
  • Ohio: Walmart
  • Oklahoma: Sam’s Club
  • Wisconsin: Roundy’s

Vidalia sweet onions are the official vegetable of Georgia and can only be grown in a small area of the state that includes 13 full counties and portions of seven others.

G&R Farms in Tattnall County, Ga., began as a small family farm owned by Walter L. Dasher in 1945. From those modest beginnings, today the operation his sons and their sons have built includes nearly 5,000 total acres of southeast Georgia farmland that produces a variety of crops. Each season they plant and grow some 900 acres of Vidalia sweet onions, harvesting between four and five million pounds annually. G&R packages their onions in state-of-the-art facilities on the farm, where quality and safety are the main objectives.

The onions are named Vidalia because of the city near where they are primarily grown: Vidalia, Ga. According to the Vidalia Onion Committee, Vidalia onions are unique due to their growing conditions. The sweet onions grow best during mild winters with regular rainfall. The unique taste is attributed to soil that is low in sulfur.
