Did you know that roughly half of all U.S. peanuts are grown within a 100-mile radius of Dothan, Ala.? The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and the City of Dothan partnered together to make sure this fact remains true for years to come through the With Innovation Regional Experience Growing Real Advancements through Student Scientists, or WIREGRASS, Peanut Project.

“Through this unique partnership across the Wiregrass [region of Southern Alabama], students are contributing meaningful data while helping shape the future of agriculture both locally and globally,” says Ian Campbell, Slocomb FFA advisor and one of the first facilitators of this initiative.

The Peanut Project, a genomics-based research program, aims to develop a high-yielding drought- and pest-resistant peanut variety while simultaneously stimulating economic development and providing students with engaging, hands-on agricultural research experiences. HudsonAlpha and the City of Dothan first partnered in 2022 to expand HudsonAlpha’s reach and give high school students an opportunity to be part of the extensive science that accompanies agriculture. HudsonAlpha has continued to grow throughout Dothan, anchoring the city’s newly built Wiregrass Innovation Center and rooftop greenhouse.

Students Sound Off

The program’s impact is proven by the experiences of participating students. “This has been a very big opportunity for me because I’m very into science,” says Rehobeth FFA member Kaitlyn Shaw. “It has been very fun to get into the lab and learn how to use all of these different, precise and specific scientific tools.”

Another Rehobeth FFA member, Nishika Patel, who aspires to pursue a career in scientific research, says the class is preparing her for her future. “I feel like whatever I’m learning right now can be a good way for me to expand my knowledge on it, and [I] want to continue.”

Ultimately, HudsonAlpha’s Peanut Project is equipping area FFA members with the ability to live out the FFA motto: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.” Pertinent knowledge is being funneled into schools to help students as they enter agricultural fields, apply for college and decide their futures, while also benefiting the farmer through research that reduces production costs, heightens crop output and establishes a trusting partner they can rely on.
