Bringing the Motto to Life
Across the country, the FFA motto — “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve” — comes to life through the dedication of FFA Alumni. These individuals give their time, skills, and encouragement to help members grow as leaders and active citizens. Their example shows that FFA doesn’t end at graduation; it’s a lifelong commitment to service.
Wes and Friends: Local Leaders in Action
In Bond County, Ill., a group of alumni known as Wes and Friends plays a key role in the success of local FFA chapters. They often say they’re “just helping out,” but their influence goes much deeper. To the Greenville and Mulberry Grove FFA members, they are mentors, role models, and proof of what it means to live the FFA motto every day.
Serving Through the County Fair
Each summer, Wes and Friends are behind the grill at the 4-H and FFA food stand during the county fair. They arrive early and stay late to keep things running smoothly. But they do more than cook. They teach teamwork, responsibility and pride in a job well done. Their laughter and stories remind students that leadership is learned by doing. Through their actions, they show how service can bring a community closer.
Supporting Chapters Year-Round
When fall arrives, they’re back under the Friday night lights, helping with the FFA concession stand at football games. While others cheer from the stands, they’re behind the counter — grilling, serving and supporting chapter fundraising efforts. Rain or shine, win or lose, their commitment shows that service comes from the heart, not from seeking recognition.
The Impact of Their Dedication
Because of their efforts, members can attend conferences, travel to contests, and complete service projects that might not have been possible otherwise. Yet the greatest reward isn’t the money raised — it’s the example they set. Wes and Friends show that FFA isn’t something you leave behind; it’s something you live every day.
A Nationwide Commitment to Service
Across the nation, thousands of alumni do the same. They serve, teach, and guide FFA members in their communities. Whether volunteering at events, coaching contest teams or flipping burgers at a county fair, alumni help students live the FFA motto in meaningful ways. They remind us that true leadership grows through hard work and service. In Bond County and beyond, FFA Alumni prove that leadership and service go hand in hand. Their dedication keeps the FFA spirit alive, reminding everyone that “Living to Serve” is more than a phrase — it’s a way of life.
