Life’s a Dance You Learn as You Go

“Life’s a dance you learn as you go, sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow. Don’t worry about what you don’t know, life’s a dance you learn as you go.”

When I first heard these lyrics from John Michael Montgomery, I thought it was nothing more than a fun song about dancing. However, if I’ve learned anything from the last four years, it’s that FFA has a way of taking something as simple as a song and turning it into a lesson that shapes your life.

Over the last four years, I haven’t just learned steps. I’ve learned how to move forward when I didn’t know what came next. There were moments when I was completely out of step, times I didn’t feel ready, qualified, or like I belonged in rooms I had worked so hard to get into.

There were moments I questioned myself more than I ever let anyone see. Moments where I stood in the mirror wondering if I was worthy of the jacket I was wearing. But somehow, every contest, every late night, and every early morning became part of the dance.

And so, I learned.

I learned how to speak even when my voice shook. I learned how to lead when I felt uncertain. I learned that growth doesn’t come from getting it perfect every time, but from showing up anyway.

Maybe most importantly, I learned that I was never dancing alone.

FFA gave me my people, my home, and the kind of support system that catches me when I fall, reminds me who I am, and pushes me to try again. Life’s a dance you learn as you go, but you also grow as you go. Somewhere along the way, steps that once felt impossible started to feel natural. As I reflect on my time in FFA and what it will mean to move forward, I’ve realized the song is changing. And as hard as that is, I know who I am now is because I kept dancing when I was scared, when I was unsure, and when I didn’t think I could.

As I unzip my jacket, I’m not walking away from agriculture, FFA, or the lessons it has taught me. I’m walking forward as someone who has learned, grown, and will continue to grow. Because this organization didn’t just teach me to dance, it taught me to trust myself in the silence after the music ends. It taught me that even when the song ends, I don’t stop. Life’s a dance you learn as you go, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thank you, National FFA, for being the best dance partner.
