For some FFA members, the blue jacket is just a memory. For others, it becomes a blueprint for their future. Every competition, Supervised Agricultural Experience and office teaches valuable skills that individuals can take with them into any career inside or outside of agriculture.

Ramon Alcaraz, a former Hanford FFA member from California who is now alumnus, is a perfect example of the impact the blue jacket has on all who wear it. FFA inspired a deep passion for agriculture within Alcaraz, and he now strives to have a future career in agricultural communications. He is currently studying at Fresno State, a school renowned for its strong agricultural program.

Read on for a Q&A with Alcaraz about the deep impact FFA left on his life!

Q: What are some of the biggest lessons FFA has taught you?

A: Get involved as much as you can, because you never know where involvement can take you, even through times of conflict. Whether it’s an unmet goal or a competition loss, members shouldn’t see it as a roadblock, but an opportunity to keep moving forward.

Q: What is a future career that you plan to pursue?

A: I plan to pursue a career that helps highlight the agriculture industry through social media and marketing. My life’s goal is to advocate for the agriculture industry.

As we hurdle toward a future where the looming challenge of feeding a growing world population stands tall, advocates like Alcaraz are crucial to ensuring we can continue supplying the world with quality food, fiber and fuel.

Q: Do you plan to stay involved in FFA as an alumnus?

A: I want to stay involved so that I can help inspire future members and guide them through the organization. I am working on getting my American FFA Degree and American Star in Agriscience.

It’s not often that a high school organization leaves such a deep impact on students that it keeps them coming back, even into college. However, FFA is an exception, and alumni like Alcaraz demonstrate this.
