Beyond the Blue Jacket: Chasing Checkered Flags

For many members in the National FFA Organization, the blue jacket symbolizes leadership, commitment and a deep-rooted passion for the industry of agriculture. For RJ Garay, a New Mexico FFA state officer, it also reflects a way of life shaped by competition, relationships and the pursuit of big dreams, both in the blue jacket and behind the wheel.
Garay believes wholeheartedly in following what inspires you. “I believe that success comes from pursuing what you are passionate about,” he says.
For him, that passion is racing. Surprisingly to some, FFA played a major role in preparing him for it. Through his involvement in the organization, Garay developed leadership skills, confidence and a strong work ethic — all qualities that are just as essential on the racetrack as they are in the agriculture industry.
“FFA helped me find my passions, and I want to help other members find theirs,” Garay says.
While traveling for races, he has had the opportunity to spend meaningful time with fellow members and state officers, strengthening friendships and building a supportive community in and out of the jacket. These moments strengthen Garay’s belief that FFA members should never feel confined to a single path. The agriculture industry offers countless opportunities, yet the interests members discover outside of the industry are just as valuable.
As a state officer, Garay’s schedule is always full. Balancing officer responsibilities while following his passion and competing in races across the country requires discipline, time management and unwavering dedication. He embraces the challenge, believing that the hard work behind the scenes is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Throughout his racing career, RJ has competed in races in Missouri, North Dakota and Pennsylvania — each race and trip adding to his experience, resilience and determination. He sees a clear connection between the lessons learned in FFA and the demands of racing.

“FFA teaches you how to work with people, whether that’s leading a team, speaking in front of a crowd or building relationships,” Garay says. “Those skills matter just as much at the racetrack as they do in agriculture.”
Whether he’s wearing his blue jacket or his racing gear, Garay carries the same values: leadership, teamwork and a drive to chase big dreams.
