Beyond the Sale: FFA Members Build Skills for Future Careers
For FFA members competing in the National FFA Agricultural Sales Career Development Event (CDE), success requires more than knowing how to sell a product. It takes communication, confidence and understanding customer needs.
Through real-world sales scenarios, competitors put their knowledge to the test while developing skills they can carry into future careers.
“Part of the sales process is figuring out what your customer wants versus what your customer really needs,” says Troy Selman, an Agricultural Sales CDE volunteer. “And just being able to listen to a person is the most important part.”
For Tyler Weeks, competing in ag sales began with a practice competition that sparked his interest. “We went to a practice CDE competition and I really decided it was something for me,” he says.
Competitors also face challenges mastering unfamiliar products. Big Foot FFA member Hoyt Dase says his team from Wisconsin started the year with little welding experience, making preparation especially challenging.
“We started from scratch, and that was a very big learning curve, but I am very proud of my team,” Dase says.
Beyond product knowledge, the competition emphasizes building relationships and communicating effectively.
“Building rapport is so huge, and being able to talk to people and build relationships,” says Agricultural Sales CDE volunteer Glenn Noll.
For Gavin Baxter, also a member of the Big Foot FFA, competing nationally provides an opportunity to showcase those skills. “Having the opportunity to compete here in Indianapolis is really cool and exciting,” he says.
Big Foot FFA member Brett Harvey emphasized the importance agricultural sales plays in connecting farmers with companies and essential products.
Whether FFA members pursue careers in agricultural sales or other industries, the competition provides valuable lessons that extend beyond the sales process.
From building confidence to strengthening communication skills, the Agricultural Sales CDE proves strong relationships are at the heart of every sale.
