A West Hardin Junior FFA member is proving that patriotism can take many forms, ranging from the barn to paper. Macallan Rose recently earned second place at the district level in the VFW Patriot’s Pen Contest, after first placing at the local post competition within VFW Texas District 2.

A Message of Pride and Gratitude

For Rose, the decision to enter the contest came from a strong sense of national pride. “I have always felt like a proud American and wanted to show how I express my gratitude,” he says.

That gratitude became the foundation of his essay, which connected his personal interests to a broader message about supporting the United States. His writing explored agriculture and FFA, ships of the Navy and his appreciation for patriotic music — demonstrating that patriotism can be expressed in many different ways.

“In my own words, patriotism is contributing to our great country and making sure you support the USA every day,” Rose says.

 FFA and Feeding America

Furthermore, his perspective reflects the values emphasized by the National FFA Organization, which focuses on leadership, service and agricultural education. Through FFA, members gain hands-on experience while learning how their work impacts their communities and the nation. Agriculture also plays a direct role in national strength because it supports families every day.

“FFA is about agriculture, which is a major industry in the U.S. and part of our nation’s history and identity,” Rose says. “I think FFA is important to showing patriotism because you are producing and feeding the country.”

Rose has already seen that connection firsthand through his FFA experiences. By raising and donating livestock, he contributes to efforts that help support others in his community. “When we are donating our chickens, we are keeping people fed,” he says.

Recognizing Hard Work

Earning recognition at both the post and district levels was a rewarding experience. “It felt good because I was able to show I am a proud American and it was one of the best essays,” Rose says.

The recognition added even more meaning to the experience; it marked a standout moment in his FFA journey.

Looking Ahead

Rose plans to stay active in FFA and grow both his agricultural skills and his commitment to service. “I plan to keep showing poultry and rabbits, and want to find more contests that connect my patriotism to agriculture,” he says. His experience highlights a simple idea: agriculture, service and patriotism often grow together.

Through his achievements, Rose highlights how young people in agriculture are not only learning valuable skills; they are also finding meaningful ways to serve their communities and their country.
