Have you ever experienced a small act of kindness that stayed with you long after it happened? In Carrollton, Mo., countless community members have felt that impact thanks to Scarlett Miller and her fruit production focused Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). Through homemade pies paired with anonymous, handwritten notes, Miller’s project has become a quiet but powerful reminder that kindness can come from anywhere.

Miller, a dedicated member of the Carrollton FFA Chapter, designed her fruit production SAE around more than just food. While she gains hands-on experience through fruit production and baking, the basis of her project is connection. This is what she does best! Miller personally delivers her treats to doorsteps throughout the community, carefully attaching handwritten notes meant to encourage, uplift and remind people that they are valued.

“Some of the most meaningful gifts I’ve ever received were handwritten notes,” she says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to bring happiness to others, and that feeling is mirrored back to me. As birthdays and holidays approach, thank-you cards and stationery are always at the very top of my wish list.”

Miller says the inspiration behind this project came from recognizing that many people carry unseen struggles. You never truly know what someone else is facing, and a small moment of kindness can make a significant difference.

“I’ve witnessed the everyday challenges farmers face, and sometimes all they need is to feel appreciated,” she says. “I combined that understanding with my love for writing notes and bringing joy to others.”

What may seem like a simple note and dessert has the power to brighten someone’s difficult day, or even change the course of it entirely. Through this project, Miller shows how agriculture can directly serve and support emotional well-being within a community.

Miller uses her strengths to make a difference in the world around her.

Although her SAE has gained special attention, Miller is deeply involved in many other areas of FFA. She serves as a chapter officer and participates in a variety of additional SAEs, including swine, crop and cattle production. She is also active in career development events and competes in both fall and spring public speaking competitions, where she continues to develop her leadership and communication skills. Miller is also a state FFA Talent participant, highlighting her wide range of abilities.

What truly sets Miller apart, however, is her heart for service. She is known for her positive attitude, strong work ethic and genuine care for others. Whether she is leading within her chapter, supporting classmates or quietly leaving encouragement at a neighbor’s doorstep, Miller consistently looks for ways to lift those around her.

Miller’s SAE proves that agriculture is about more than producing goods; it is about growing relationships, strengthening communities and making a difference, one small act at a time. Through her handwritten notes and thoughtful deliveries, she leaves a lasting impact that reaches far beyond the classroom and into the hearts of her community.
