The Joy in Giving

“You will see smiles on the faces of children,” according to the Christmas song “The Gift of Giving.” During the holiday season, this is exactly what happens when people come together to help others. One project that brings joy to families is the Angel Tree and Food Basket program.

Many people may wonder what this project is about. According to Donna Jessee, “It is a project that provides basic needs to students, as well as Christmas wishes and gifts.” Jessee is in charge of the program and also serves as Rivercrest ISD’s social worker and communities in schools district coordinator in Texas.

Jessee explained that the Angel Tree program was already established when she came to Rivercrest eight years ago. Since then, it has grown to include all students within the Rivercrest ISD District, from birth through 12th grade. Every October, teachers and staff members help by making Angel Tree nominations. Letters are also sent to parents across the district to make sure every family has the opportunity to participate.

Students and staff are able to help through district-wide activities, such as the canned food drive, blanket drive and toy drive. The project also brings the entire community together. People from Talco and Bogata, Texas, along with local churches and individuals from nearby counties, helped by adopting Angels. Many donated money or items, such as clothes, toys and socks.

Rivercrest FFA officers also had the privilege of participating in this meaningful project. “It felt good to be a part of the amazing impact,” says Rivercrest FFA Sentinel Paige Henry. The chapter helped support the effort and experienced firsthand how important it is to give back to others, especially during the holiday season.

Thanks to this project, many families were helped during Christmas. More than 165 children received clothes and toys, and over 70 families were given food baskets to help meet their basic needs. This shows how much can be accomplished when everyone works together.

The holiday season is not just about receiving gifts, but about giving to others. Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life.
