“What is one statement you firmly stand behind?

For many in FFA, that answer is simple. That agriculture is for everyone. No matter a person’s background, ability or circumstance, there is always a place in the agricultural community. It is a place defined by compassion, shared purpose and open arms. That truth was proved at the San Jacinto County Fair in September during the second annual Special Hearts Show.

The Special Hearts Show was founded by Kinsley Rhodes, a local Shepherd FFA member, 4-H officer, and Texas state 4-H ambassador. Having shown cattle from local fairs to major stock shows, Rhodes has always had an “inborn fondness” for livestock and the agricultural lifestyle. She wanted others, especially youth with special needs, to experience that same joy. Her vision was simple: to make livestock showing accessible to every child, regardless of disadvantages.

Volunteers from Shepherd FFA, Coldspring FFA, and the San Jacinto County 4-H joined forces to aid in bringing that vision to life. There were many engaging stations, such as a petting zoo, a craft corner, a sensory table with various feed textures, and a show ring. There, youth participants could practice their showmanship skills with gentle lambs and goats loaned by the local county fair exhibitors. Each exhibitor left the ring with a ribbon, but organizers say the real measure of success was the response from the participants. Many arrived hesitant and left smiling, asking questions and eager to learn more about animals and agriculture. Volunteers noted how quickly students picked up handling techniques and how visibly their confidence grew as they moved through the stations.

The Special Hearts Show continues to grow as a county tradition. One built on compassion, opportunity and unity. Its message endures: one vision, one goal, one family, all connected by a shared love of agriculture.
