Since 2014, the Highland-Craigmont FFA Chapter has served its community by cleaning up local highways. Positive chapter leadership contributed to a record turnout of 19 members for 2025’s cleanup day. The chapter finds deep meaning in community service projects and strives to serve the parts that need it most. Due to a nearby dumping area, large amounts of trash litter the highway in the small town of Craigmont, Idaho. The chapter found that the Adopt-A-Highway project would be the perfect opportunity to solve this problem and serve the community while teaching its members valuable life lessons.

While the roadside cleanup helps keep their community clean, this project also helps teach chapter members leadership and community awareness. Chapter president Kylee Beck notes that this event “benefits members by showing them the effects of their actions.” Seeing this example in their community helps FFA members be more mindful of how they treat it. Chapter members learn to better respect and care for their community.

Emma Robinson, a member of Highland-Craigmont FFA, developed a deeper enjoyment for FFA by serving her community. “I really like to help my community … I have learned to respect it more,” Robinson said. Community service projects are key in teaching younger FFA members the importance of giving back to those who support them.

In addition to this project, the chapter hosts other service events such as planting flowers around their town, community breakfasts, and blood drives. Beck highlights that community service is “good for chapters because it builds leadership and really shows that members are living to serve. And that’s what you’re here for in FFA.”

The Highland-Craigmont chapter has created a legacy of service. Leaders, like Beck, help continue this legacy and encourage FFA members to get on the road to service.
