No-Sew Scarves Offer a Simple Act of Service

Fleece, a few knots and a whole lot of heart — that’s what can be found in the Living to Serve booth at the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo. Members have the opportunity to create no-sew scarves that will be put into care packages for homeless in need this winter.

Members embrace the importance of service and how giving back doesn’t have to be complicated. “I feel like each one of us can give a lot,” says Aubrey Miller, a member of the WIllow Springs FFA Chapter in Missouri. “We can do something so small that can go a long way for somebody else. And I feel like that’s really important.”

By Friday morning, members had already made 1,800 scarves and were on track to reach the goal of 2,000 by the end of the national convention.

But living out the FFA mission of “Living to Serve” doesn’t end when the members head home from Indianapolis.

National FFA program specialist Sarah Dickinson says the opportunities continue for chapters in their local communities. “Our team provides grants that students can apply for and teachers can apply to those grants and will help them fund these projects that they can do in their community.”

Volunteer Jaysa Fillmore says she’s always thrilled to see the light bulb moments. “I like seeing them like, ‘oh, we could do this at home,’ and they are identifying organizations they could help within their own community,” she says.
