What is Habitudes?

Since 2003, Dr. Tim Elmore and the Growing Leaders organization have revolutionized the teaching of leadership concepts with the use of images through their Habitudes series.

The National FFA Organization has partnered with Dr. Elmore and Growing Leaders to produce an FFA exclusive resource Habitudes: The Art of Telling Our Story that reinforces concepts of advocacy such as conversation, credibility, respect, and dedication.

What’s included in the Habitudes teachers kit provided by National FFA?

25 student books that include 13 lessons each centered around an image about advocacy. Each lesson ends with several discussion questions, a self-assessment, and an activity for student to complete to allow them to practice using the concept discussed within the lesson.

1 teacher’s guide that includes a DVD explaining each Habitude, an overview with implementation instructions, additional activity ideas, discussion questions, and move clips to go along with each lesson.

Flash drive that includes PowerPoints slides and a pdf worksheet to go with each lesson.

How can I get a Habitudes teacher kit?

Visit ShopFFA.org. Simply add a teacher kit to your cart and place your order as usual. The kit is absolutely free! At this time, we are only able to provide 1 kit per Advisor.

Why does Habitudes work?

Each Habitudes lesson begins with a story and an image to go along with the story. There are 13 lessons, each being only about 4 pages long! Typically, teachers spread these lessons out over several weeks to a whole year. Following each story, Tim Elmore has provided clear guidelines that will help students internalize the lesson. The discussion questions and additional activities allow students to practice what they learn while connecting the lessons to their lives and today’s agricultural issues.

How can Habitudes: The Art of Telling Our Story impact your students?

Participating in the Habitudes readings, discussions, and activities will prepare students to advocate for important causes and enter the workforce by building skills in collaboration, communication, and leadership.

Student will be able to:

  • Identify and develop qualities of an effective advocate and leader, such as commitment, focus, credibility, strength, empathy, and persistence.
  • Effectively listen to others to allow space for positive dialogue and collaboration
  • Craft a clear, simple, and relevant advocacy message that will encourage a diverse audience to act towards a common goal.
  • Deliver a message that is engaging, interactive, and memorable.

A majority of teachers use the books to train their chapter officers or teach the lessons within an agricultural leadership class. Other places Habitudes lessons are being taught are introductory ag classes, chapter meetings, or as substitute teacher plans. The contents of the teacher kit provide guidance and flexibility, so that teachers are empowered to use the materials how they best see fit.
