Pearland FFA members visit a local elementary school to help showcase agricultural education to younger students.
As members of FFA or even typical school students, we are constantly asked our “whys.”
Why are you involved in your chosen extracurricular?
Why are you going to that college?
Why are you picking that major?
The common theme?
Most of the “whys” of high school are about our future and why we claim it as ours. Equally true is that to know who we want to become, we have to first understand who we are now.
Whether it’s through a career or leadership development event (CDE/LDE), a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), a speaking development event (SDE), or an officer position, we are given every opportunity in FFA to discover our “whys.”
LDEs give us a chance to explore public speaking and dive into the diversity of topics across agriculture. Through CDEs, we gain hands-on experiences and skills in agriculture that we can take into our future careers. In our SAEs, we use what we’ve learned in our agricultural education classes and apply that knowledge to what we are passionate about. SDEs help us find our voices and develop a passion for advocacy. In officer positions, we not only serve others but also learn how to be good leaders as we grow alongside those we serve.
The point?
Finding your “why” can be scary and easy to give up on. But through our organization’s opportunities, we can explore our “whys” and learn more about the diverse industry we serve.
