History was made for the Oklahoma Panhandle when Colby Barnes of Balko High School was elected to serve as the 2026-27 Oklahoma state FFA reporter.

With his election, Barnes becomes just the fourth individual from the Oklahoma Panhandle to ever serve as a state FFA officer in Oklahoma history, joining a distinguished and remarkably short list of leaders from the region. The first Panhandle member to hold state office was C. Vernon Howell of Guymon, who served as the west vice president in 1931-32 and the National FFA president in 1932-33. Decades later, Mel Ray Albert Wright of Balko served as northwest area vice president in 1998-99 before being elected Oklahoma FFA president in 1999-2000. Most recently before Barnes, Vanessa Wiebe of Hooker served as northwest area vice president during the 2014-15 term.

In a region known for its deep agricultural roots and small town communities, Barnes’ election represents a milestone moment for Balko FFA and agricultural education programs across western Oklahoma.

As Oklahoma state FFA reporter, Barnes will serve as a statewide ambassador for agricultural education and the FFA organization. Throughout the coming year, he will travel across Oklahoma, connecting with members, promoting agriculture, sharing student stories and representing thousands of FFA members at leadership events and activities.

Barnes’ journey reflects the values deeply rooted in rural communities: hard work, humility, leadership and service. His election serves as inspiration for younger members across the Panhandle, proving students from small schools can achieve leadership roles at the highest level of Oklahoma FFA.

Family, friends, advisors and supporters celebrated the historic accomplishment as Barnes took the stage during the Oklahoma State FFA Convention. For many across the Panhandle, the moment represented not only personal success for Barnes, but pride for an entire region.

Now, as he begins his year of service in the blue jacket, Barnes carries with him the pride of Balko, the Oklahoma Panhandle and a legacy achieved by only a select few before him.
