The holiday season is a time for family, celebration and long-standing traditions. Although many people focus on food and decorations, few stop to think about the role of agriculture in holiday traditions. For FFA members, the holidays are a reminder that agriculture is at the heart of many seasonal moments.
Agriculture on the Holiday Table
To begin with, most holiday meals rely heavily on agricultural products. Turkey, ham and beef are common main dishes, while dairy products like milk, butter and cheese are essential for side dishes and desserts. Baked goods, such as cookies, pies and breads, also depend on ingredients like wheat, eggs and sugar that are grown or raised on farms. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, agriculture plays a key role in bringing people together during the holidays through shared meals and traditions.
Beyond the Plate: Holiday Traditions Rooted in Agriculture
In addition to food, agriculture supports other holiday traditions. One of the most recognizable symbols of the season is the Christmas tree. Real Christmas trees are grown on tree farms across the United States, and often take several years to reach maturity before being harvested.

FFA Members and Supervised Agricultural Experiences
Many FFA members have a personal connection to these traditions through their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects or family farms. Some raise livestock that may become part of holiday meals, while others work with crops or agricultural businesses. Through these experiences, members gain firsthand knowledge of the responsibility and dedication required in agriculture.

Serving the Community Through FFA
FFA also emphasizes service during the holiday season. The West Hardin CCISD FFA Chapter in Texas proudly participated in the Saratoga Lighted Christmas Parade, showing school spirit while supporting local traditions. In addition, the chapter donated to “Siren Santa,” helping provide gifts and support for underprivileged youth in the community.
These activities reflect the National FFA Organization’s commitment to leadership, service and making a positive impact beyond agriculture.

Giving Thanks During the Season
Finally, the holiday season is a time for gratitude. Farmers, ranchers and agricultural workers continue caring for animals and crops year-round, even during winter months. As FFA members, we are thankful for those who make our traditions possible and proud to be part of an organization that prepares the next generation of agricultural leaders.
