Meet Brock Hurley

Brock Hurley of Rensselaer, Ind., is currently serving as the Rensselaer FFA Chapter president, the Indiana FFA District I president and is a member of the Indiana FFA Executive Committee.

As the first member of his chapter to attend the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC), Hurley quickly realized it was more than just a trip — it was an unforgettable experience.

“I’ve always been very interested in American history and politics,” says Hurley. “This trip offered a unique opportunity to experience history firsthand by visiting museums, monuments and government buildings.”

A Monumental Experience

For Hurley, one of the most impactful parts of WLC was the monument tours.

“Every American should have the humbling experience of visiting the monuments of Washington, D.C.,” he says. “Laying your hands on the limestone and knowing the history that built those walls connects you to the leaders of the past in a way nothing else can.”

At the Lincoln Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Hurley was deeply moved by the words etched in stone. “They reminded me of the importance of standing up for the causes I believe in,” he adds.

Serving With Passion and Purpose

Known for his community-oriented spirit and passion for service, Hurley believes leadership is about impact. “I hope to make a difference through volunteerism, taking on leadership roles in my community and advocating for important causes — especially agriculture.”

WLC reaffirmed his belief that leadership doesn’t have to be complex to be meaningful. “My perspective shifted on how simple it is to do what we can, with what we have, where we are,” he says.

Inspired by what he learned about servant leadership, Hurley organized a district-wide food pantry drive upon returning home. “It was surprisingly simple, but a huge blessing to those receiving the food and supplies.”

Leadership Legacies: From Washington to Indiana

Hurley credits much of his inspiration to those who’ve gone before him, and the sessions at WLC reinforced the idea of making a lasting impact on the world around you.

“WLC helps you connect with historical leaders and understand how they shaped the world,” he says. “It shows you how to become a better advocate for the causes you’re passionate about.”

Among Hurley’s role models is Kendell Culp, who serves as the Indiana Farm Bureau vice president and an Indiana State Representative. “He’s been a leader in my local community for years and has shaped my views on what a leader should be,” Hurley says. Culp is known for his common sense policy and leadership marked by humility and a kind heart.

Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation

As Hurley looks toward a bright future, he shares this advice: “Show up, take every opportunity you can to learn and turn your dreams today into your legacy tomorrow.”

He also emphasizes the importance of making the most of opportunities in high school and college. “If you don’t take advantage of them, you’ll miss out on valuable learning experiences,” he says. “Get outside of your comfort zone and push yourself to learn something every day. We all have dreams and aspirations, and I believe if you set your mind to achieving them, there’s no limit to the positive impact you can make. Older you will thank yourself one day if you choose to do that.”

Hurley also reflected on how his leadership roles in FFA have propelled him forward. He’s taken on numerous positions and knows these opportunities have challenged, but also shaped him into the person he is today and will continue to guide him in the future.

“If you’re not challenging yourself and growing, you won’t gain the skills necessary for leadership in your career and the organizations you’ll be involved in,” he says.

Planting Seeds for Policy and Progress

This fall, Hurley will begin a new chapter at Purdue University, where he plans to major in agricultural economics with a concentration in policy and pre-law.

“WLC inspired me to explore agricultural policy,” he says. “I’m not exactly sure where my journey will lead, but I know I want to be involved in agricultural policy or law in some way.”

Hurley has left a strong, lasting impact on Indiana FFA and will continue to make great strides as he advances in his career.
