From Dream to Legacy: A 50-Year Journey Comes Full Circle

FFA members understand that success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of dedication, sacrifice and a commitment to grow.
For Gordon and McKenzie Wilson, the 100th Virginia FFA State Convention was more than just another convention; it was a celebration 50 years in the making.
The Legacy of a Blue Jacket
Gordon Wilson, a former member of the Laurel Park High School FFA Chapter from 1972-76, had completed the requirements for his State FFA Degree as a senior. However, as the oldest of five children and an essential part of his family’s tobacco farm in Axton, Va., he chose to stay home and help his family, rather than attend convention. Because of that decision, Gordon never received the degree he had worked so hard to earn.
“Not being able to receive my state degree after I worked so hard to be able to apply for it sucked, but family always came first,” Gordon says.

Half a century later, his granddaughter, McKenzie Wilson, followed in his footsteps. A five-year FFA member and three-year member of the Bassett FFA Chapter, McKenzie dedicated herself to leadership activities, career development events and her Supervised Agricultural Experience to earn her State FFA Degree.
“Walking across the stage and receiving the highest degree on the state level FFA offers, I realized my work has finally paid off,” Mckenzie says.

The Moment Worth Waiting For
At the 100th Virginia FFA State Convention, the grandfather and granddaughter shared a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they received his Honorary State FFA Degree and her State FFA Degree together.

The moment held even greater significance, as Gordon was originally supposed to receive his degree during the Virginia FFA Association’s 50th state convention.

Where Legacy Meets Leadership
Their similarities go beyond family ties. Gordon served as his chapter president in 1975-76, while McKenzie will serve as Bassett FFA president during the 2026-27 school year, and both share an interest in animal competitions.
Their story is a reminder that the blue jacket connects generations, and that some dreams are worth waiting for. Through dedication, sacrifice and a shared passion for agriculture, the Wilson family shows that FFA memories truly last a lifetime.
