Agriculture is the quiet heartbeat of Virginia, shaping everything from the rolling hills of our rural counties to the cutting-edge research labs in our universities. While many see farming as a distant, non-relatable industry, the members of our FFA community know it is an active, everyday connection.

In late September, the connection came alive in an unforgettable way when Virginia Tech and the Mecklenburg FFA chapter hosted the legendary Dr. Temple Grandin, bringing her lifetime of agricultural advocacy and knowledge directly to the next generation of leaders.

Beyond the Classroom Movie

Dr. Grandin has spent decades advocating for the livestock industry and championing women in agriculture. For the Virginia FFA chapters and college students in attendance, these events were more than just lectures; they were inspiring experiences. Teachers and students who had only ever seen her movie in class or read about her work in textbooks found themselves sitting across from the pioneer who revolutionized global animal welfare.

During the visits, Dr. Grandin shared her brief life story, detailing the challenges she overcame and how she led the way in a male-dominated livestock industry. She didn’t just lecture on livestock handling; she offered real-life advice that left a lasting impact on numerous members. In a world that pushes for relentless growth, she reminded the crowd that “we need to do optimal, not maximal.” This approach she shared really showed you need to give your all to something and not be lazy because you have so much going on.

Her words had an impact on several attendees, serving as a powerful guide for personal growth and leadership. Addressing the teachers and students, she emphasized that growth requires pushing past the familiar, stating, “Students have to get exposed to new things to start doing more.”

The event concluded with an open Q&A session and a personal book signing, allowing members to engage directly with their role model. By bridging the gap between industry icons and local high school chapters, this historic visit proved that agriculture isn’t just about farming the land; it is about cultivating curiosity, mentorship and community traditions that impact everyday life.
