Every year during the last week in February, FFA chapters across the nation celebrate the traditions and fellowship of FFA through National FFA Week. National FFA Week was established in 1948 and was set to be held during the last week of February to correspond with the birthday of George Washington on Feb. 22. National FFA Week serves the purpose of honoring Washington’s legacy as an agriculturist and shines a spotlight on the crucial role of agricultural education in the growth of future agricultural leaders.
National FFA Week brings excitement to many FFA chapters for good reasons. Chapters and their officers spend weeks prior to National FFA Week planning fun events and activities to celebrate the importance of agriculture. Whether it be dress-up days or after-school activities, each chapter has a unique way of celebrating during the week.

Green County FFA (GF FFA) is one of many FFA chapters that celebrate National FFA Week in a variety of ways throughout the week. In the weeks leading up to the last week in February, GC FFA officers spend their time planning and creating activities to make the week stand out for members. GC FFA officers, with the help of advisors, meet together to create a dress-up day schedule for the week. Fun dress-up days, such as USA Monday or Flannel Friday, assist in getting members involved.
An FFA Week kickoff is held on the Saturday before the week begins. During the kickoff, the GC FFA Greenhand Ceremony takes place. This ceremony recognizes the new members of GC FFA who have worked hard to earn their Greenhand Degree. After the ceremony, members partake in a meal and games as the anticipation for National FFA Week heightens.
Friday, the last day of National FFA Week, is when many of the activities take place. On Friday, Drive Your Tractor to School Day occurs. GC FFA members are allowed to drive their tractors to school to represent the pride of local agricultural communities. An FFA party also takes place. Lunch is provided for all GC FFA members, and members are encouraged to participate in games and various activities during their agriculture class time.

Not only is National FFA Week a time of excitement for local FFA chapters, but it also provides a key opportunity to inform and thank the public for their support of local agriculture. GC FFA highlights from the past year are recognized in a special insert published in the local newspaper dedicated to National FFA Week. The section displays articles about events and successes, highlights successful former members in key interviews, exhibits photos from throughout the school year and formally thanks the community for its support and pride in GC FFA and agriculture.
