For more than 42 years, Dr. Mark Russell dedicated his career at Purdue University to helping students discover their potential. From his early work as an Extension Horse Specialist at the University of Illinois in Animal Sciences to serving as Department Head of Agricultural Education and Communication at Purdue University, one simple philosophy guided every stage of his journey: “Your best next experience.”
Finding Purpose When the Path Changes
Growing up in New York with a father who was a teacher, Dr. Russell originally planned to become a veterinarian at Cornell University. When that plan didn’t work out, he found himself asking, “What am I going to do now?” Instead of searching for a new “Plan A,” he focused on finding his best next experience. That mindset led him to a position at the University of Illinois before eventually joining Purdue University, where he spent the next four decades helping students grow through education and leadership.
The Power of the Next Step
Dr. Russell believes many people become overwhelmed trying to find the “perfect” career or make the “right” decision. Instead, he encourages students to focus on the next opportunity that helps them learn, grow, and move forward. Whether deciding what to do over the summer, choosing classes for the next semester, or considering a future career, he asks one simple question: “What do I need to do next?”
He also emphasizes that setbacks are part of the journey. While success builds confidence, failure often provides valuable direction by revealing what may not be the right fit. Rather than viewing disappointment as the end of the road, Dr. Russell encourages people to see it as another learning experience that prepares them for what’s ahead.

As individuals discover what they enjoy, what they do well, and how each opportunity aligns with their purpose, they create a strong foundation for long-term success.
Throughout his career at Purdue University, Dr. Russell also encouraged students to expand their horizons through international education. He co-led undergraduate study abroad experiences, helping students gain a broader understanding of agriculture, education, and cultures around the world. These experiences gave students the firsthand opportunity to see the world through a different lens and helped them discover another “best next experience” that would shape their lives long after returning home.

Dr. Russell often reflects on Purdue University alumnus Neil Armstrong and the famous quote, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He believes some of the world’s greatest accomplishments begin with a single step. In the same way, students can achieve extraordinary things by focusing on the next opportunity to learn and grow.
In FFA and other student endeavors, Dr. Russell acknowledges that thinking about the future can feel overwhelming. However, by taking life step by step and asking questions such as “What will I accomplish? What will I learn? What connections will I gain? And how does this align with my life?” students begin building a mindset focused on growth and purpose. Those short-term goals can ultimately lead to meaningful long-term achievements, one small step at a time.
Dr. Russell’s career serves as a reminder that success rarely follows a straight path. Instead, it is built one experience at a time by asking, “What’s my best next experience?”
