From the moment one steps up, there are times when every student needs someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on. At Bristol County Agricultural High School (Bristol Aggie) in Dighton, Mass., that person is consistently Ms. Sara Canuel. She is the teacher who goes above and beyond for everyone, ensuring every voice is heard, every concern is addressed and every student feels genuinely supported.

Ms. Canuel serves as an environmental engineering teacher at Bristol Aggie, where she introduces students to the critical intersection of science, sustainability and real-world problem solving. Her classroom is more than a place to learn formulas and engineering principles; it is a space where students discover how their work can positively impact the environment and their community. With patience and enthusiasm, she guides learners through complex topics, such as water quality, renewable energy systems, soil conservation and sustainable design. Under her instruction, abstract concepts become tangible projects that students can be proud of.

Beyond the Classroom

Beyond her role in the classroom, Ms. Canuel is a dedicated advisor of Bristol FFA. In this capacity, she pours her energy into developing well-rounded young leaders. She helps students prepare for career development events, public speaking competitions and hands-on agricultural projects. Whether it’s staying late to review a speech or simply listening when a student is overwhelmed by school and life, Ms. Canuel consistently shows up. Her door is always open, and her support is unwavering.

What sets Ms. Canuel apart is her ability to see the potential in every student. She understands that teenagers face pressure both inside and outside of the classroom. Academic challenges, personal struggles and future uncertainties can feel heavy. In those moments, she becomes more than a teacher; she becomes a mentor, a cheerleader and, sometimes, a quiet source of strength. Her calm presence and genuine care create a safe environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and emotions. She listens without judgment, and offers guidance that empowers young people to believe in themselves.

Colleagues and students alike describe Ms. Canuel as someone who leads by example. She models integrity, compassion and dedication every single day. In an educational landscape that can sometimes feel rushed or impersonal, she chooses to slow down and make meaningful connections. Her commitment to environmental stewardship extends far beyond lesson plans; it is reflected in the way she nurtures the next generation of thoughtful, responsible citizens.

For many students at Bristol Aggie, she is the reason they push through difficult days and dare to dream bigger.

In a school known for its agricultural roots and forward-thinking programs, Ms. Canuel stands out as a shining example of what great teaching and advising truly mean. She doesn’t just teach environmental engineering; she teaches resilience, leadership and humanity. When students need someone in their corner, they know exactly where to turn. Ms. Canuel is always there, one steady step above the rest, making sure no voice goes unheard and no student walks alone.
