Makenna and Joel Hackney were the champions of the 2026 North Clay FFA pickleball tournament.

Friends and supporters of the North Clay FFA Chapter in Illinois gathered in the high school gymnasium on Feb. 21, 2026, to kick off National FFA Week with the chapter’s first pickleball tournament. After the sport took the nation by storm, hosting a pickleball tournament as a chapter fundraiser was discussed in early meetings of the North Clay FFA Officer Team.

Serving Up FFA Spirit

Through promotions on social media and local radio, 12 teams of two assembled to compete for the title of tournament champion. Spectators enjoyed concessions and bake sale treats while cheering on players throughout the day.

After a morning of friendly yet competitive matches, the father-daughter duo of Joel and Makenna Hackney claimed the championship title. The pair received specialty engraved paddles, which were hand crafted in the North Clay FFA agricultural shop, as their first-place prize.

Raising Funds, Building Leaders

The tournament raised over $700 to support chapter activities and opportunities through the National FFA Organization, helping members grow as leaders while strengthening community connections.

When asked about the event, North Clay FFA Vice President Leigha Ruesken said, “This year’s tournament was a successful learning experience. I am so thankful for all of the players and volunteers who helped make this possible. We look forward to making our pickleball tournament a tradition, as we plan to come back next year with more efficiency, participation and fun!”
