Living to Serve, Giving to Grow

In many schools, National FFA Week can look like just another themed dress up week, or a few lighthearted agricultural facts shared over morning announcements. But in the heart of East Texas, it means something more than that. In San Jacinto County, National FFA Week marks a time for friendly rivalry, hard work and a tradition of giving back.

Each year, the local chapters of Coldspring FFA and Shepherd FFA face off in a canned food drive competition. It’s not just about collecting cans; it’s about representing the true spirit of FFA through leadership, service and community pride.

Throughout the week, both chapters gather donations, knowing that every pound collected makes a real difference. At the end of the week, the total weight of goods from each school determines the winner. The winning chapter celebrates with a pizza party generously sponsored by the San Jacinto County Texas Farm Bureau, but the real win belongs to the community. All donations benefit the senior citizens of San Jacinto County, spreading hope and support where it’s most needed.

It’s inspiring to watch a community unite during FFA Week that’s driven by one simple truth: service is at the heart of who it is. As we celebrate the blue and gold, let’s keep that spirit alive and encourage every chapter to find their own way to give back.
