For the Whitley County FFA Chapter in Kentucky, National FFA Week is a time of celebration and remembrance. During this time of year, their chapter celebrates FFA by hosting school-wide events and honoring FFA alumni from their chapter. The current members of their chapter work hard to make National FFA Week more special with each passing year.

To begin the week, Whitley County FFA hosts a schoolwide spirit week in collaboration with their school. To start the week off, the Whitley County Colonels participate in their first dress-up day, “‘Merica Monday.” On this day, students and staff will wear red, white and blue to show their patriotism.

On Tuesday, the Whitley County FFA encourages their classmates to wear blue and gold to honor their late classmate and FFA member, Fisher Barton. Barton was a beloved student at Whitley County High School, where he served as Whitley County FFA sentinel and junior class vice-president. His legacy continues to live on through the Whitley County FFA Chapter and everyone who received the pleasure to meet him. On Tuesday, Whitley County FFA continues his legacy by encouraging everyone to “Live Like Fisher.”

Wednesday is “Dress Like Prewitt Day,” when FFA members dress up as their FFA advisor. Whitley County FFA also recognizes the accomplishments of their FFA members for FFA contests and embodying the FFA motto. Whitley County FFA starts off Thursday with “Camo vs. Cow Print Day.” On this day, students dress in hunting gear or western attire and compete to see which theme gets the most participation. To reflect on the impact of Whitley County FFA alumni and current members, Whitley Country FFA hosts “Throwback Thursday.” To wrap up the week, Whitley County will be participating in “Red and Black Day” to celebrate their school’s basketball team’s accomplishment of rank one in the district. Whitley County FFA will have their very own pep bus to cheer on their school’s basketball team. On this day, Whitley County FFA will be honoring Fisher Barton once more with “Fisher Friday.” Whitley County students will honor the impact Fisher had on so many individuals.

To the Whitley County FFA Chapter, National FFA Week is a week of celebration and program visibility. Reese Croley, Whitley County FFA president, reflects on a time when their agriculture program was almost removed. “Mr. Croley, our past advisor, is my grandpa and I remember going out and protesting against the board because they wanted to take away my papaw’s program.”

Due to this memory, advocating for their agriculture program is crucial to Reese. “We just want to make sure everyone knows how important FFA and agriculture is and National FFA Week is a great way to show it off.”
