Una Poema Para Chile/A Poem for Chile

En Diciembre, FFA miembros Jazmin Palma and Rachel Noble de Carolina del Norte viajaron al otro lado del ecuador para pasar tiempo en Araucania, Chile. Viajando con un programa de su universidad. Ellos escribieron un poema sobre su tiempo explorando la cultura de los mapuches [Uno de los grupos indígenas más grandes en América del Sur] y la manera de agricultura que esta comunidad practica en este hermoso país.

In December, FFA members Jazmin Palma and Rachel Noble from North Carolina travelled to the other side of the equator to spend time in Araucania, Chile. This was an opportunity through a program offered at their university. They wrote a poem about the time they spent exploring the Mapuche Culture [one of the largest indigenous groups in South America] and what agricultural practices look like in their community and beautiful country. 

 

Una Poema Para Chile/A Poem for Chile

Ayer comí una cereza,
Yesterday I ate a cherry,

Me recordé del tiempo que estábamos en la Región Araucanía de Chile
It reminded me of the time we spent in the Araucania region of Chile

Tomó catorce horas para llegar al campo,
It took fourteen hours to get to the farm,

Y rápidamente nos dimos cuenta de que es muy diferente de lo que estábamos acostumbrados
Where we quickly realized how different things were compared to what we are used to

En Chile, nos despertamos con el canto de los pájaros,
In Chile, we wake up to the sound of singing birds,

De manera similar como reíamos en la mesa durante la cena anoche
Similar to how we sounded at dinner the night before

Cuando caminas afuera te saludan las montañas que elevan sobre ti en el fondo del valle,
When you walk outside, you are greeted by mountains towering over you from the bottom of the valley,

En la distancia puedes ver la gran volcán Rucapillán,
In the distance you can see the great volcano Rucapillan,

Que lleva el nombre de Villarrica al otro lado de los océanos
That is known by the name of Villarrica across the oceans

En Chile, compartimos pan junto alrededor de una mesa grande,
In Chile, we break bread together around a large table,

La comida es rica en sabor, como la tierra bajo los pies
The food is rich in flavor like the soil beneath your feet

El vecino es tu hermano, y los niños son primos, corriendo y jugando en el campo
Your neighbors are your siblings, and the children are cousins, running and playing throughout the farm

Construyes el techo sobre la cabeza con la madera cercana,
You build the roof above your head with wood that is nearby,

Las gallinas, los patos, los chanchos y los perros corren despreocupados en el campo,
The chickens, the ducks, the pigs and the dogs roam freely around the farm,

Juntamos frambuesas, plantamos papas, y cortamos madera,
We gather raspberries, plant potatoes, and chop wood, 

Al mismo tiempo, el perro Corbata pastoreó los patos y estaba preparando el almuerzo
While Corbata [the farm dog] herds the ducks and lunch is being prepared

En Chile, cuando comemos no hay prisa,
Chile, there is no rush when we eat,

Conversamos, compartimos y comemos la comida más fresca que hay
In We talk, share, and eat the freshest food there is

En la raíz de todo, hay equilibrio y respeto,
At the root of everything, there is balance and respect,

Para la tierra, los cultivos, los animales, y el uno para el otro
For the land, the crops, the animals, and for each other

Los Mapuches nos enseñaron que todo tiene un propósito y un alma,
The Mapuche showed us that everything has a purpose and a soul,

El agua que fluye por toda la tierra, las fresas que cubren el suelo del bosque,
The water that flows throughout the land, the strawberries that cover the forest floor

Los Araucaria araucana [árbol nativo], y el bambú también
The Araucaria araucana [native tree], and the bamboo too

Cuando viajas a un país extranjero, algo que todos deberíamos tratar,
When you travel to a foreign country, something that we should all try to do,

Abre su mente a la posibilidad de una forma de vida diferente a la propia,
Open your mind to the possibility of a way of life different from your own,

Come nueva comida, pruebe el café, haga preguntas, mire las estrellas,
Eat new food, try the coffee, ask questions, look at the stars,

Y más importante esté presente en el momento
But most importantly be present in the moment

Existe la posibilidad de una barrera con el idioma,
There may exist the possibility of a language barrier,

Pero música, risa, comida y el amor de los perros y fútbol son universales
But music, laughter, food and a love for dogs and fútbol are universal

Los ojos cuando regresas estarán cambiados
When you return, your eyes will be changed

Dándonos cuenta de que no somos tan diferentes después de todo,
Realizing we are not so different after all,

Y ahora yo miro a Chile en todas partes.
And now I see Chile everywhere.
