FFA members across the nation are learning that advocacy is not just about speaking up, but about standing up for the programs and opportunities that matter most to them. Even when an issue may seem small to others, FFA members understand that those “small” things often have a big impact on their chapters, schools and communities.

In November 2025, Virginia FFA members took part in advocacy trainings held across the state to prepare for FFA Day at the Capitol. These trainings focused on helping members feel confident sharing their stories and explaining the importance of agricultural education to lawmakers.

Confidence, Purpose and Advocacy

This year, members heard from Tess Seibel, a former Virginia FFA state officer and National FFA officer, who shared her experiences in advocacy and encouraged members to use their voices with confidence and purpose.

“I really enjoyed getting to come back and work with fellow blue jackets, especially for something this important,” says Seibel.

Building Bridges Between FFA and State Leaders

During the trainings, members participated in a variety of interactive activities designed to improve communication skills. These included practicing how to clearly explain an issue, taking part in mock meetings with delegates, creating short “log lines” (similar to movie descriptions that quickly share their message) and learning how to write meaningful thank-you letters. Each activity helped members understand how preparation and professionalism can make a lasting impression.

“I really appreciate getting first-hand experience with what the meeting will be like up at the capitol,” says a training participant. “I cannot wait until we get to use the skills we learned when we meet with the delegates.”

Advocacy is especially important when members step into the Virginia State Capitol to represent FFA. This year, Virginia FFA members are advocating for state delegates to become more involved by attending local chapter events, such as banquets, chapter meetings and chapter community service projects. Building these connections helps lawmakers better understand the impact FFA has on members and agricultural education.

Through these trainings, FFA members are learning that their voices matter and that when they speak with confidence and purpose, they can create real change.
