The West Plains FFA Chapter in Missouri embodies the FFA motto of “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve” in many ways, but specifically in raising money for local families in the community during their time of need.
When this chapter learns about a community member facing hard times, it rallies with the community to host a smoked rib fundraiser. Throughout the years, these fundraisers have raised substantial funds, with every dollar going directly to families in need.
The project began about 10 years ago. The shop class built an original smoker, and more have been built as the years have gone by. As word has spread about the ribs, it has become common for the West Plains FFA Chapter to smoke 250 racks for each fundraising event.
To ensure the event will run smoothly and successfully, preparation for the smoked rib fundraiser starts weeks in advance. The school district posts various announcements on social media to communicate with the community and explain what the rib fundraiser is and who the money raised will benefit.
On the day of the fundraiser, West Plains R-7 staff, FFA members and various community volunteers come together to help throughout the day, guaranteeing the success of the fundraiser. FFA members help by skinning, seasoning, smoking and plating the ribs — all while interacting with various community members coming to help or purchase.
“It’s always a fun day for everyone, because we are all there with the community and we are giving back,” says 2025-26 West Plains FFA President Macie Doss. “It is really meaningful to us.”
It’s more than just a fundraiser — it’s a day of fellowship that represents the FFA spirit of “Living to Serve.”
The West Plains FFA Chapter is led by advisors Rachel Brotherton, Tonya Jedlicka and Jay Hale.
