The Idea

The Bristol FFA Chapter has started a new tradition with the creation of the Massachusetts Agricultural Youth Leadership Summit. This initiative was initially envisioned by 2024-25 Chapter President Shayn Jones, who recognized a unique opportunity within the Massachusetts FFA Association.

Despite its smaller size, with just over 2,000 members across fewer than 20 chapters statewide, Massachusetts FFA offers unique advantages not found in larger associations, such as those in Texas and California. Rather than viewing this as a limitation, Jones recognized it as an opportunity — one that fostered stronger connections, meaningful collaboration and the ability to bring members together in a centralized space.

His vision was to create a hub where Massachusetts FFA members could collaborate, brainstorm, build relationships and grow as leaders, advocates and problem solvers in the agriculture industry. Beyond simply connecting members, the goal was to highlight the diversity of agriculture across the Commonwealth while strengthening unity within the state association.

Visions Coming True

That vision became a reality when the first Massachusetts Agricultural Youth Leadership Summit was held in February 2025. This initiating event focused on communities, emphasizing how agricultural landscapes vary from town to town and city to city across Massachusetts. Attendees explored real-world examples of regional agriculture and gained a deeper understanding of how local environments shape agricultural production.

Building on the success of the inaugural summit, the event’s leadership transitioned to 2025-26 Bristol FFA President Nathan Lachance. Under his guidance, the planning and execution of the summit expanded both in scope and impact. The December 2025 event was centered on animal science and marked a significant step forward for the program. Attendance more than doubled from the previous summit, with more than 65 Massachusetts FFA members participating from chapters across the Commonwealth.

The animal science-focused summit featured three guest speakers who shared their experiences and career paths in animal agriculture, including an animal health inspector, the chief veterinary inspector and an apiary inspector. These speakers offered valuable insights into animal health, biosecurity and regulatory roles in agriculture, allowing members to connect classroom learning to real-world applications.

What’s Next?

Moving forward, the Bristol FFA Chapter plans to host another summit focused on different leadership styles with FFA. This upcoming event will take place in February 2026, marking the day after the one-year anniversary of the first summit. The event will continue the tradition of bringing members together to develop leadership skills, strengthen collaboration and celebrate the diverse strengths that FFA members bring to their chapters and the Commonwealth through hands-on discussions, professional networking and leadership development opportunities.
