When we think of “living to serve” within FFA, some of the first people we think of are outstanding FFA members, state officers, alumni and more. But we tend to forget our agriculture teachers and FFA advisors, who make all this possible. My FFA advisor, Alexis Howell, is one of the best.

Howell always does so much for our chapter and members. In addition to all of the work she does during school, the amount of time she spends outside of class is admirable. Even with all that Howell does, she is never looking for a thank you or recognition, which is what “living to serve” truly means.

Howell has worked at her current school, Evergreen High School in Ohio, for four years. Over this time, she has advanced our chapter in many ways, with one of her main goals being to increase involvement. She has done so by having our school’s first state officer in over a decade, having many students cross the stage at state convention for state degrees, officer books and career development events, having an American FFA Degree recipient this year, and more.

Recently, Howell and another local FFA advisor, Jessie Schulze from Delta High School, have been working on a new Greenhand workshop for our new members. Their goal is to increase involvement and excitement about FFA this year and beyond. They plan to have their chapter officers each have a station that teaches their Greenhands about many different contests in which they can compete. In the end, once everyone has gone through the stations, members will get the chance to have a mock competition for all of the contests they got to learn about.

Just this one event shows Howell’s dedication, commitment, love and true service toward FFA. Outside of all the work she puts in for our chapter, she is also there for us outside of school. She shows genuine care and interest in our lives and situations. This shows what kind of person she truly is.
