Agriculture is built on the importance of service. Farmers, soil scientists, agricultural engineers, ranchers, agricultural educators, extension agents and more—they all have common goals: to sustain human life and provide for the world with a sustainable and reliable supply of food, fiber, and other products to meet human needs while simultaneously protecting the environment and fostering economic growth.
With agriculture being the foundation for FFA, it’s only natural that service is the organization’s heart.
Fulfilling the last line of the FFA motto, Living to Serve, Hot Springs FFA, located in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota, received a grant from the South Dakota FFA Foundation to pursue a local service-learning project: the FFA Community Closet. The closet is located in the high school and consists of gently used clothes, backpacks and school supplies, as well as new socks, underwear, and toiletries for students who would like them. Along with these items, snacks and drinks will also be available to fuel the student body.
While focusing on the importance of academics, athletics, clubs and fine arts, Hot Springs FFA works hard to prioritize its members and ensure the school’s students are safe, full and comfortable. The chapter hopes to foster a community of support while encouraging a love and appreciation for agriculture.
