Currituck County FFA: Planting Possibilities

The Currituck County FFA Chapter continues to make a meaningful impact in its community through a cherished annual tradition, visiting the kindergarten classrooms at Shawboro Elementary to promote agricultural literacy and spark curiosity in young learners.

Each year, as part of this outreach, Currituck FFA officers and members travel to elementary schools across the county to read an agriculture-related book and donate a copy to each school. This tradition helps build lasting connections while ensuring students and teachers have resources to continue learning beyond the visit. While this element remains an important part of their program, there’s also an added, more hands-on, interactive experience for the students.

The officers eagerly stepped into the role of teachers and mentors, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and passion for agriculture into the classroom. Through interactive discussions and engaging visuals, members introduced students to the concept of photosynthesis, breaking it down into simple, easy-to-understand ideas. Kindergartners learned how plants use sunlight, water, and air to make their own food and grow, connecting science concepts to the world around them in a fun and memorable way.

The lesson came to life during the hands-on seed planting activity, a highlight of that year’s visit. With guidance from FFA officers, students carefully planted their own seed. Learning the importance of soil, water, and sunlight in the growth process, this experience not only reinforces the lesson but also gives each child a sense of ownership and excitement as they begin to care for their plant and watch it grow over time. Moments like this help students build an early connection to agriculture and the environment.

This annual visit also reflects the FFA motto, “Doing to learn,” by actively engaging kindergarten students in planting and growing their own seeds. This group embodies “Doing to learn”, showing that the most meaningful lessons come through hands-on experience. At the same time, they grew by teaching others, proving that learning is continuous and a shared process. For these officers, this outreach is much more than just a lesson. It is an opportunity to grow as leaders by teaching and interacting with younger students. Members develop communication, leadership, and teamwork skills, and they also gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of agricultural education and the role they play in sharing it with others.

This ongoing partnership highlights the power of community involvement and education by investing time in the younger generations Kurt County FFA is helping cultivate, not only future agriculturists, but also informed individuals who understand and appreciate where food and resources come from.

Though this is an annual tradition, Currituck County FFA continues to embody the mission of the national FFA organization, making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success.
