National FFA Organization
INDIANAPOLIS (Monday, Aug. 26, 2013/National FFA Organization) – Melvin Thompson, who recently retired as south region agricultural education coordinator with the Georgia FFA Association, has been awarded a VIP citation by the National FFA Organization recognizing his significant contributions and dedication to FFA and agricultural education.
Thompson has accomplished a lifetime of service dedicated to FFA and agricultural education. He began a career as an agricultural education teacher in 1969. In 2000, he was named regional coordinator of the south region of Georgia FFA and was instrumental in growing the state’s FFA membership to the third-largest association in the U.S. today.
His three daughters served as Georgia FFA state officers and obtained college degrees in agricultural education. In retirement, Thompson continues to support FFA by serving as a judge for state and national CDE and proficiency categories, contributing financially to the Georgia FFA Foundation and regularly attending the annual Georgia FFA Convention and annual National FFA Convention & Expo.
Thompson was nominated by Ben Lastly, state FFA advisor with the Georgia FFA Association.
“The VIP citation recognizes the dedicated individuals who contribute to the FFA mission of student success through their hard work and cooperation,” said National FFA Organization CEO Dwight Armstrong. "Without such strong and outstanding commitment, FFA would not be able to help build strong character in its members, who in turn build strong families, communities and industries.”
The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 557,318 student members in grades seven through 12 who belong to one of 7,498 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
