It pays to go green!

Last year, 73 FFA chapters in 28 states and Puerto Rico were awarded Living to Serve: Environmental Grants to help them develop service-learning projects that address environmental issues in their communities.

Those chapters are currently making a difference by setting up recycling and composting programs; leading water conservation efforts; building nature trails and wildlife sanctuaries; hosting educational workshops; taking control of illegal dump sites, and more.

Sanilac FFA in Michigan has spent the year working to improve local water quality. Members started by learning about water pollution and its effect on the environment. They also learned to perform chemical analysis of surface water and collect and identify macro invertebrates that are useful for making assessments on water quality. In addition to water testing, the chapter hosted clean-up days with community partners that resulted in the collection of 2,000 pounds of scrap metal. The FFA members have continued to monitor water-quality levels throughout the year, while also educating the community on illegal dumping.

We are happy to announce that these grants will be available again for the 2013-2014 school year! Chapters may apply for up to $2,000 to support year-long service-learning projects focused on developing and implementing plans to address local environmental needs. Informational webinars will be held every Thursday in May and the first week of June to review the submission process and allowable project types. The application is due June 12, 2013. Additional information can be found at www.FFA.org/envirogrants.
