Turf Managers oversee the care and maintenance of turf grasses in ornamental and landscape horticulture such as on golf courses and lawns.
 
Career Information: 
Golf is big business, and today's Turf Managers are entrusted with the management of the entire maintenance operation. The job requires much more than just technical ability. It requires training in plant sciences, landscaping, business management, personnel administration and in public relations. Turf Managers must research the latest scientific findings in turf grass and other aspects of golf course management, such as golf course management trends, profiles of golf courses and superintendents, business techniques, new equipment, seed cultivatars and advice from industry experts. Turf Managers may work with environmental scientists who conduct extensive field investigations to analyze soil textures, vegetation, subsurface terrain and hydrology patterns. They would analyze the site to determine the best way to integrate environmentally sensitive areas into the course and select the most attractive and functional native grass species to minimize chemical use. They also practice integrated pest management to avoid applying unnecessary pesticides and other chemicals.
 
Educational Requirements: 
4 year degree within discipline
 
Suggested High School/Collegiate Courses: 
Agriculture, earth sciences, horticulture, agronomy, math, business and computers. Degree in Turf Grass Mgmt
