General Information: 
Grain buyers are contract buyers who locate, purchase and ship grain to processors and the government based on their requests.
 
Career Information: 
Grain sales involve networking daily with managers of grain elevators, cooperatives and shippers of grain. Grain Buyers are specialized in growing zones. They source and market grain commodities from the cooperative, elevator or grower for the government or processors. They arrange for the purchase, shipment and delivery of the grain, calculate the market value of the grain, and bargain with the seller to obtain a favorable price. Grain Buyers may enter into contracts with cooperative, elevators or producers for delivery of grains that meet certain conditions. They are responsible for writing contracts and enforcing them. Grain Buyers must be knowledgeable in plant production, processing, merchandising, research, or extension. A strong scientific background involving agronomic food crops, as well as business and sales, are beneficial. They keep daily records on kinds and grades of grain received, prices paid, amount purchased and amount in storage.
 
Educational Requirements: 
4 year degree

Agriculture, economics, accounting, finance, horticulture, botany, agronomy, biology, math, business and computers.
