General Information: 
Grain brokers buy and sell both grain and futures for clients at local markets and at large commodity exchanges.
 
Career Information: 
Grain Brokers manage grain elevators. They examine samples to determine extent of dirt, burrs, hulls, seeds, and other dockage. They also extracts samples and forward them to local grain exchanges for analysis and certification of moisture and protein content. Grain Brokers then review the analysis to ascertain amount of moisture and protein present in sample. Brokers calculate the market value of the grain and bargain with sellers to obtain grain at a favorable price. They purchase grain or issue storage certificates, compute shipping costs to determine the most economical way of transporting grain, and review and approve grain settlements to ensure that payments are made according to weight, moisture, and protein content. They must keep daily records on kinds and grades of grain received, prices paid, amount purchased and amount in storage. They direct workers engaged in unloading, loading, storing, and mixing of grain for shipment and milling.
 
Educational Requirements: 
4 year degree within discipline
