General Information: 
Golf course superintendents are responsible for overseeing all aspects of running a golf course, from turf management and green scheduling to personnel decision making.
 
Career Information: 
Golf Course Superintendents are entrusted with the maintenance, operation and management golf courses. Responsibilities include supervising the construction and maintenance of the golf course; supervising the maintenance and repair of construction and maintenance equipment; rendering professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the facility's board of directors or managing body; and participating in all long-range planning meetings. Golf Course Superintendents assume responsibility for managing and maintaining all club properties, which may include: the golf course(s), maintenance equipment, the golf car fleet, clubhouse grounds and landscaping, tennis courts, swimming pool and other recreational facilities, open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage and areas outside the perimeter fence, sod farm and nursery. They prepare the annual budgets for the maintenance and capital improvement of course properties, as well as interview, hire, train, direct and supervise a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining the properties. The superintendent has authority to terminate employment of subordinates. Golf Course Superintendents frequently inspect the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs. They acquire equipment and purchase necessary supplies to maintain the golf course and other properties; they are responsible for inventory control and they oversee the equipment maintenance programs. They must keep accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures and pesticide applications.
 
Educational Requirements: 
4 year degree within discipline
 
Suggested High School/Collegiate Courses: 
Agriculture, horticulture, botany, biology, turf management, math, business and computers. Degree in Turf Management
