2010 New Century Farmer

Fifty students were selected to attend the New Century Farmer conference, July 19-24, at the Pioneer – A DuPont Business, headquarters in Johnston, Iowa.  While at the conference, individuals will partake in several educational sessions featuring distinguished business and industry professionals such as Jim Wiesemeyer (Informa Economics), Jon Buck (TurnKey Leadership), Dr. David Kohl (Virginia Tech University), and Dr. Ronald Hanson (University of Nebraska).  The scheduled presentation topics will range from farm succession, global agriculture, new and emerging farm machinery to agricultural marketing and finance.  The conference is free for the selected students, thanks to the generous contributions of the sponsors – Pioneer – A DuPont Business, Rabo AgriFinance, and Case IH, with media partner Success Farming as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

2010-2011 National Collegiate Agricultural Ambassador Team Selection Underway! 

Ag AmbassadorsThe selection process for the 2010-11 National Collegiate Ag Ambassador team is now underway.  Selected ambassadors will have the opportunity to promote agriculture awareness around their community and state, as well as have the chance to work with different organizations and groups to help them better understand the value and importance of the agriculture industry.  Ambassadors are awarded scholarship money for their service.  Additionally, ambassadors are given a digital camera to take pictures of their presentations, and the use of a laptop and LCD projector for the year.   For more information or questions, contact Marty Tatman at mtatman@ffa.org

To date over 350 presentations have been given on various agriculture topics to 20,000 plus people by the 2009-10 ambassador team.  The team continues to work hard on developing new workshops through the assistance of the sponsors – BASF – The Chemical Company, Syngenta, and Elanco Animal Health.

2010 FFA GO: Africa

Congratulations to the six college-age FFA members recently selected to participate in the FFA Global Outreach: Africa (FFA GO: Africa) program.  This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity features an all-expense-paid journey to Zambia, Africa, to help local farmers fight area hunger and poverty through sustainable agriculture and conservation.  The program is made possible by generous sponsorship from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.  The 2010 FFA GO: Africa participants are:

2010 I-CAL Team Returns from Malaysia and Taiwan

I-CAL Team Selection The 2010 I-CAL team, made up of twelve college students from across the U.S. returned from Malaysia and Taiwan this past month after being in Asia for eleven days.  While overseas the team had the opportunity to see and understand the importance of international ag, trade and marketing, as well as see how American agriculture plays a role in the global market place. 

The team sat in on meetings with experts from different commodity and agricultural groups including the Federation of Livestock Farmers Association of Malaysia, Foreign Agriculture Service, Taiwan Council of Agriculture, America Institute in Taiwan, and Taiwan Feed Industry Association.  The team also toured a poultry farm and processing plant, swine operation, palm tree oil production facility, feed milling operations, and two grain unloading ports.  Time was also spent touring cultural sites including the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan and the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.

Tim Martini from Colorado State University said of the program, “We all know that agriculture is a global industry and being able to spend time here in Asia has opened our eyes to different agricultural practices, and industries in agriculture. We can’t thank the United States Grain Council and The GRAINS Foundation enough for sponsoring this program.”  The I-CAL program is sponsored by The GRAINS Foundation as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
